Let me introduce you to my snares!
Hey guys, I started my newsletter on Constant Contact, but I've thought about using SubStack (this platform) for my newsletters and posts, and wanted to get y’alls input! What do you think about substack? Do you like this? I think the advantage is to have a place/website to go to as well as having this stuff in your inbox!

I’ve gotten questions over the years about my snare drums but I’ve never walked through all the snares I have, but thought y’all may enjoy checking these out!
1. Mapex Black Panther Black Widow
(Discontinued but check out this snare as a comparable one) | Details Specs | Video Example
Man, I love this guy! It punches through any mix but doesn’t lose any body. This is my go-to snare for gospel music!
2. Mapex Black Panther Sledgehammer
(Discontinued but check out this snare as a comparable one) | Detailed Specs | Video Example
I’ve used this snare primarily as my side snare/deep secondary snare. This snare is deeper in tone (obviously) but also a little dryer with less overtones due to it being a hammered snare. It records great, and does great in medium to low tunings
3. 1960’s Ludwig Supraphonic
(Current model, but you can fid a lot of old ones on eBay) | Video Example
I feel like this snare needs no introduction! It’s a classic and I love it. Mine honestly needs some TLC but I’ve been playing it as is for years! It excels in mid-range tunings! The new one is pretty pricey, but you can find vintage ones on eBay pretty easily. I got this one for $200!
4. 13x7 Pork Pie Little Squealer
Check it out on Guitar Center (not in stock) | Similar on Sweetwater | Video Example
It’s been a minute since I used this little guy honestly! It’s such a unique size and shape. It’s got a lot of high end pop but can also be brought down to a lower tuning and still hold a great tone. I mostly used it in higher tuning settings!
5. Gretsch Gretsch Drums USA Custom Snare Drum - 5 x 14 inch - Chrome over Brass
(Check it out here) | Video Example
My friend Daniel Kinner recommended this snare to me and it’s incredible. I haven’t used it as much recently because I’ve got several workhorse snares that I cycle between, but this thing records INCREDIBLY WELL. It’s a pretty pricey snare, but for me it’ll be a lifetime snare that will be in my catalogue when I need it!
6. PDP Concept Popcorn Snare 10x6
Check it out here | Check out a similar newer snare here for $129!
Want the true story? I got this for a concert one time and I haven’t really used it since lol. You can find them used all over the place and the good news is that popcorn snares are pretty cheap. this one has a tom arm attachment which makes it convenient to mount it as well!
7. Ludwig Supralite - 5.5 x 14 inch
Check it out here | Video Example
I just did a detailed review of this snare which you can check out in the link here, but bottom line is that this snare is $200 and SMACKS! I think it’s a great one to add to anyone’s collection or as a house snare for a church!
8. Vintage Leedy Marching Snare
This snare is super special to me and I’ve never once played it! It was a gift my wife gave to me! She purchased it from a vintage shop. If you have any idea where I could get more information on it, let me know!
9. Tama Silverstar Snare
Video Example | For a similar, small snare, check this one out
I love this little guy! It came with a drumset I got that was stolen, unfortunately. It’s a super cheap snare, and has a ton of character and crack!
10. Honorable mention - Ludwig Acrolite
I’ve got an old Acrolite that I forgot to take picture of… sorry. They don’t make them anymore but the Supralite has somewhat filled the space the Acrolite use to occupy!
I hope you’ve enjoyed a little bit of a deep dive into the different snares that I have and use! If you have any questions, just let me know!
